This blog post is in partnership with Avocado Green. I hope you enjoy this mattress review, and thanks for reading!
Over the summer, I spent a lot of time shopping for decorations and furniture for my first apartment. I did a lot of bargain shopping, including getting some secondhand furniture, but I knew I wanted a new, natural mattress. Since I’ll have my mattress for years to come and I spend a third of my time asleep (maybe a bit less than that for these three years of law school… 😉 ), I figured it’d be worth investing in a high-quality mattress.
One of my goals has been to prioritize natural, chemical-free living as I transitioned into my new space. Since it can feel overwhelming to make a change like this all at once, I’ve made gradual switches. I haven’t been tossing anything out, but I’m buying natural products when I run out of whatever I had before (like cleaning and cooking supplies) or when I need to make a big purchase.
I did a lot of research on natural mattresses and decided I wanted an Avocado Green mattress. Then, I reached out to the company to see if they’d want to partner up for a blog post. They said yes! I’m really excited to share my review of my Avocado Green mattress.
I was initially drawn to Avocado Green because the company uses natural and organic materials from sustainable sources. Traditional mattresses contain a lot of chemicals, but each Avocado mattress is made of only 100% natural latex, natural wool, and organic cotton. They’re moisture-wicking, have a natural fire barrier with no chemical flame retardants, and are free of pesticides, heavy metals, and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs).
I ordered a queen Avocado Green mattress with the additional 2-inch pillow-top. After using this mattress for a full semester, it’s my favorite mattress I’ve ever had.
I figured the odds were pretty good that I’d like this mattress since it has over 3,700 reviews averaging five stars on Avocado Green’s website! In addition, Avocado Green was ranked the #1 Mattress of 2018 by Consumer Reports, and I really trust those reports since they do such thorough third-party testing.
With the pillow-top (pictured above), the mattress is a bit firmer than I expected, but I’ve ended up really liking the level of firmness. On a scale from 1 to 10 (if 1 is so soft that you’d sink into the mattress and 10 is extremely firm), I’d rank the mattress with pillow-top a 6.
Avocado Green says the pillow-top is especially good for side sleepers (me 🙋🏻♀️) and those who prefer a softer mattress, while back/stomach sleepers and those who prefer a firmer mattress generally do well with the standard mattress.
Both the standard and pillow-top mattresses have a pressure-point support system to ensure that your hips, shoulders and back are in proper alignment while you sleep, regardless of your preferred sleeping position.
Avocado Green also says that the coils in its mattresses are designed in a way that reduces motion transfer, so your sleeping partner’s motion is less likely to disturb you.
I really love Avocado Green’s overall brand, including its commitment to environmental sustainability and its design choices. Avocado Green donates 1% of its revenue to environmental nonprofits, and the mattresses are eco-friendly (recyclable and biodegradable!).
Every Avocado mattress is made to order in California, and you can see the level of detail in the upholstered side handles and the sturdy stitching along the seams. Since the mattresses are made to order, you should order your mattress a few weeks or even a month before you need it, to be on the safe side. I think they’re worth the wait!
When I placed my order, I added on the set-up service since I live on the top floor of an apartment building with no elevator, and I had no idea how I’d bring a large mattress box up the stairs.
The delivery man set the mattress up in under 10 minutes, and then he carted my old mattress away. I have no idea how a giant mattress fits into a cardboard box, but it was pretty cool to watch. I wish I’d taken a video of the mattress coming out of the box and taking shape!
There was no off-gassing (which is what you smell with new traditional mattresses when they come out of the box), and no chemical smell, so it was sleepable right away.
Overall, I’ve had the best sleep I can remember on my Avocado Green mattress. I like knowing that I’m reducing the amount of chemicals in my home, and I love supporting a company that’s health-focused and environmentally conscious.
If you’re unsure about ordering a mattress online, Avocado Green offers free shipping and a 100-night sleep trial. You can test a mattress for over 3 months and then take advantage of the free return if you don’t like it. Avocado Green will arrange for the mattress to be picked up and donated to a charity, so it’s an easy return and the mattress goes to a good cause.
The company also stands behind its products with a 25-year warranty, and I have no doubt that they’re made to last. I love my little sleep haven with my Avocado mattress!
