So, I just got the coolest package EVER. My grandpa, who’s kind of my soul twin, mentioned that I should expect a box in the mail sometime this week and to be sure to open it immediately. He told me this a couple different times as we talked on the phone throughout the week, which I thought was a little odd, but I assumed either a) he was sending me pears, which he’s done before (I LOVE them and eat them like candy but wasn’t really sure why I’d need to open them right away) OR b) he was sending me something that he was just really excited about.
Yesterday, the mysterious package came. Any guesses as to what was inside?
What about now?
Uh yeah, it was a box packed with ice cream! HECK YES. You can bet I was flipping out! There was a cooler filled with pints of ice cream, and then a solid layer of dry ice on top of the cooler, and then the cooler was in this big box, so after traveling for hours in the 95 degree heat, the ice cream was still perfectly solid.
He sent six different flavors of McConnell’s ice cream, which I’d never tried before since it’s a brand local to Santa Barbara, CA. I’ve already sampled the salted caramel chip and the double peanut butter chip (and shared with my family, of course) and the closest brand it resembles to me is Häagen Dazs.So far, the double peanut butter chip is my favorite, which is peanut butter ice cream with a peanut butter swirl and chocolate chips. Drool.I always joke that ice cream is my love language because I LOVE when people give me ice cream (and I’ve actually given friends pints of ice cream for their birthday in the past) but I’ve never received a whole box full of pints in the mail before. Best. care. package. ever.
I called my grandpa right after I got the package to let him know I’d received it, and he said it was a welcome-home-from-indonesia-here-now-relax-and-have-some-ice-cream-before-crazy-school-life-starts-again-gift. Well, okay- works for me!
And I say he’s my soul twin because we love so many of the same things from hiking to historical fiction to sudoku to murder mystery novels to biking and obviously, to ice cream! He’s the one I can blame for teaching me it’s okay to eat ice cream at any time of the day, AND he introduced me to Ben & Jerry’s way back in the day. He also taught me it’s easier to scoop hard ice cream with a fork, which is really true! But then your ice cream has fork marks in it…Anyway, thanks for letting me share my excitement about this fun gift– I honestly wish there was a way I could share the ice cream with all of you! I hope you have a great weekend and get to enjoy some ice cream (unless you’re lactose intolerant or healthier than I am– in that case, enjoy your own favorite treat) sometime soon!
Questions for you:
Have you ever sent or received a care package?
What would be in your “best care package ever”?
Stacie @ SimplySouthernStacie says
You have the sweetest grandpa ever!! Ice cream is the way to my heart as well!
Ellen @ My Uncommon Everyday says
Awww that’s so sweet!! My mom sends fantastic care packages when I’m at school. It’s always a nice surprise 🙂 Enjoy all that ice cream!
Rachel says
What a great gift! It’s sweet he chose something that you both enjoy. If I were to receive my own best care package ever, it would be filled with bags of Lay’s original chips… I kind of have an addiction to them. 😉
Liv says
Hav you seen all the new crazy flavors of Lay’s out now, like Biscuits and Gravy?!
Emily @ My Healthyish Life says
How sweet of your grandpa! Receiving packages is the best. I love when my mom sends me random care packages when I’m at school. There’s usually almond butter involved so I’m a happy camper.
Liv says
You and Georgie with your almond butter addictions! So funny (and understandable) <3
Dannii @ Hungry Healthy Happy says
A delivery of ice cream is the best kind of delivery! What an amazing gift from your grandpa.
Hayley@healthyregardshayley says
This is so sweet!
Niki @ Life With Niki says
It is my dream to one day get a care package! One filled with ice-cream would definitely do the trick… those chunks in your look amazing! What a sweet gesture from your grandpa <3.
Faith VanderMolen says
That’s the sweetest thing ever!! I lI’ve how close you two are! I’d also love to know some of your favorite historical fiction books!! I love that genre, but am the worst at finding books on my own and love getting recommendations:) enjoy your ice cream…yum!!!
Brie @ Lean, Clean, & Brie says
How sweet! And now you have me craving ice cream before noon hahaha!
Jamie says
Holy cow that really is the best care package! I sent one to my little sister (sorority, not blood) when she was living abroad in Thailand. Nothing too crazy, but definitely lots of candy that’s hard to find over there. Everyone needs some SourPatch Kids and trashy magazine : )
Julia @ Lord Still Loves Me says
I love this brand! Thankfully I live in So-Cal, so I have had it on a few occasions, and I am excited you got the opportunity to have them! My prom date actually asked me to prom by writing it on a pint of Ben & Jerry’s! How could I say no?? It was the best and totally special to me. 🙂 What a sweet grandpa you have! Have a fantastic weekend, Liv! 🙂
Liv says
Umm I think that’s got to be the best “promposal” I’ve ever heard. He really knew the way to your heart!
Lacey @ Runs and Roses says
Yessss! McConnells is the best. It’s probably what I miss most about living in Santa Barbara, If you’re ever there you HAVE to go to their store, My friends and I used to go at least once a week freshman year #noshame.
Liv says
No way! I’m not sure if I’d actually heard of McConnell’s before the other day, but that makes sense since we live on opposite sides of the country. I’d be making lots of trips to their store if I lived there, too! 🙂
Emily says
Wow, your grandpa sounds like a really sweet grandpa. :))) I <3 that you are soul-twins with him. That's a rare and precious relationship.
Abbie says
That was so sweet of your grandpa! (Funny side note: He looked *exactly* how I pictured him!) I want to try that fork trick…it might look a bit weird, but if it works, it’s worth it!
I have never received a care package, but I can’t remember if my family has sent one or not. I personally haven’t! It seems like a really cool way to bless someone, though!
I think my best care package would be people… Especially relatives that I don’t get to see very often, but also certain friends. That might be kind of cheating, though. Your ice cream one is pretty darn good, too! 🙂
My sister and I have been wanting to try some Ben & Jerry’s, so I’m thinking about asking her about maybe having some this weekend. It’s hot here, so that would be perfect!
Hope you have a great weekend!
Liv says
People really do sound like the best kind of care package, if that counts! Instead of sending a box, just send yourself 🙂 Ooh, I hope you get to try B&J’s this weekend- so many great flavors to try!
Kristen @ Glitter and Dust says
I’ve never thought about being able to ship ice cream!!! What a great treat to receive in the mail – I never would have guessed! My ideal care package would be a big box of samples of products I have never tried before (snacks, lotions, nail polish, anything and everything fun). Be sure to savor that special ice cream! 🙂
sarah says
Sounds like you have the best grandpa! I love the term soul twin, that’s one I’ve never heard before- you should put a patent on it 😉
Liv says
Haha! I’ll get to work on that patent 😉
Ellie says
I received a care package from my friend from CA a couple years ago and she send me the best stuff! Avocados, trail mix, shells and other things I enjoyed very much. It made me feel so loved!
Liv says
I love that she sent you avocados- what an awesome friend 🙂
Sam @ Grapefruit & Granola says
Well that is pretty much the most amazing package ever!
Alison @ Sweetly Petite says
Your grandpa seems like a gem <3 Oh my word, I'm sure receiving that box of ice cream was like heaven on that hot summer day!
I have never received a care package, I think it would be really exciting to receive one! I'm going to college in the fall, so maybe I will get one then. 🙂
Have a great weekend, Liv!
Liv says
He’s a gem, for sure! Ahhh, I hope you LOVE college and have a great freshman year 🙂
Jessica @ kiwiyogirunner says
Your grandpa sounds SO sweet!!! That ice cream looks heavenly! I love sending care packages and have a Japanese pen pal who I’ve been doing that with for years. We have a massive communication barrier but it’s heaps of fun! My ideal care package would have lollies (candy) and nail polish! Two of my fave things ever especially if I’m feeling a little down! 🙂
Liv says
How did you find a Japanese pen pal?! That sounds like such a fun relationship!
Jessica @ kiwiyogirunner says
Super fun! I went to Japan for a month when I was 15 and my host sisters friend and I hit it off and wrote for a few years (in my very limited Japanese!) and then she got busy with uni and marriage and stuff and so now I write to her mum ha! Her mum and I have been writing for like 5 years now! 🙂
Liv says
That’s seriously one of the coolest things I’ve heard! You’re such a sweet and genuine person and I bet your friend’s mom LOVES getting your letters 🙂
Rebecca @ MyEagerFeet says
What a sweet care package! My mom always made me care packages for finals, and it was fun to get candy someone else had picked out for me.
rachel @ Athletic Avocado says
awww man you are so lucky! Who doesn’t love a giant box filled with ice cream!!!
Paola Angeli says
Your grandpa is just ADORABLE! And it looks like he sure knows his granddaughter well then 😉 All of those pints look so good.
