Before coming to college, I was a bit apprehensive about having a roommate. I’d heard lots of roommate horror stories, but fortunately, I absolutely lucked out with having Shannon as my roommate.
Last spring, I signed up for a roommate match website that asked me questions like what time I go to bed (may’ve overestimated how much sleep I’d be getting in college), what hobbies I have (probably eating & running), and how neat I am (may’ve slightly exaggerated my neatness). I got matched with Shannon, and we always joke now that it felt like we were using an online dating site. She’s made my freshman year so much fun, and I’ll miss having her as my roommate next year when I’m an RA. There are so many things I love about Shannon, but here are just a few:
1. She considers bananas, peanut butter, and chocolate to be the three main food groups. Her snack of choice is always banana slices dipped in peanut butter and chocolate chips (eaten with a fork, naturally).
2. Her sense of direction is just as bad as mine. The first time we met each other, we went to the mall to shop and eat dinner at Chipotle. Afterwards, she had no clue she’d parked in the huge lot that wrapped around the mall, so we drove around in my car for a good 15 minutes looking for her car in the dark while it was pouring rain. It was then that I realized we were meant to be roommates.
3. When she wants to make sure she gets up and works out the next morning, she goes to bed in her workout clothes. GENIUS.
4. On that note, she can also rock a dinosaur onesie like no one’s business.5. She thinks I’m funny…and that takes a special sense of humor, for sure. She frequently laughs until she cries. See her little teardrop?6. She brought me ice cream from Kilwin’s (where she worked during high school) during the first week of college. She brought me coffee & moose tracks, and at that point, I had a veryyyy good feeling about this roommate thing.
7. She can power walk faster than an Olympian speed walker. Walking with her is actually faster than taking the bus, and it’s almost a workout by itselfβ I’ve actually started cramping up on our way to class!
8. And aside from all of those other wonderful qualities, she’s one of the friendliest, funniest, and sweetest people I know. Love you, Shan!
Questions for you:
Have you ever had a roommate? Do you have any fun roommate stories or horror stories?
Stacie @ SimplySouthernStacie says
That’s so awesome that you were paired with a roommate who is now your friend. That was the one thing that always scared me about college. I had no clue how I would have lived in a tiny room with a complete stranger.
Hilary says
I had a similar experience with my freshmen year roommate! I was so nervous as well, I had never officially met my roommate until the day I moved in haha, maybe not my best decision, but it all worked out! That is such a sweet post! I bet she is loving it!
Emily @ My Healthyish Life says
So sweet! I was paired with my freshman roommate through one of those websites (Room Surf maybe?) and I loved her! I sleep in my workout clothes too π
Liv says
That’s the same website we both used! Haha you and Shannon would get along perfectly π
Shannon says
Oh my goodness!! This is the sweetest thing ever!! Love you so much Liv!
Liv says
Love you, too! <3
Jessica @ kiwiyogirunner says
You guys are adorable! I love that you got lost and drove around looking for the car, that is totally something I would do! π
Right now I am lucky enough to be sharing a room with my bestie, how often does that happen?! Soo much fun! Fun random stories… We have a million, but most recently we took a bath together lol. Not weird cos we were both wearing swim suits! Like a spa I swear haha
Liv says
So fun that you and your best friend are living together π And too funny that you made your own “spa”!
Carmen says
Omg, wow! Reason 1 would be enough!! Your roommate seems lovely, so pretty and nice π You’re so lucky! Unluckily, here in Italy, we have universities and not colleges, and so we don’t use to sleep in the school place, but we come back home or to our apartement every evening (we live with our family or we share flats with friends, and in this case it’s similar to your concept of ‘rommates’). I’ve always been attracted by your culture, btw.. It’s so fascinating. It seems you have more possibilities to make friends and to have experiences with people. I’ve always thought that when you share your life with someone, you always come to a point of break-up with this person, but then you have to choose: 1) accept his/her faults and keep going; 2) delete the friendship π In this case, I’m glad to see you love her. Tell us more, again, about her: she seems so funny and positive π
Have a nice day, dear!
Liv says
It’s funny that you’d say that because I’ve always been so fascinated by Italy’s culture! I hope you get the opportunity to make some great friends and have some wonderful adventures with them during your university years π
Lauren @ ihadabiglunch says
Oh my gosh she brought you Kilwin’s? Now THAT’S a good roommate!!
I didn’t like mine at first (she was wayyyy out-of-bounds compared to my Catholic high school experience haha) but we ended up loving each other. I definitely don’t regret going random — it was a great experience of growth too.
Liv says
I’m all about those kinds of connections π So glad your roommate experience turned out well in the end!
Hailey says
I’m so glad you had a good room mate experience for you freshman year! I lived in an apartment freshman year because I went to community college before ASU and they didn’t have dorms at the community college, and my roommate was very messy, didn’t leave the door locked, so I would come home from school and walk right in and she was nowhere to be found. It just creeped me out! And didn’t pay the rent on time. I would have loved to have you girls as roommates! We could just eat and run…the best hobbies π
Liv says
Oh, how strange! We would be the PERFECT roommates! We could run together every morning and eat Blue Bell together every night π (after this crazy recall ends!)
KAT says
How cute are you two?! I’m so glad you got matched with such a great roommate. I lived at home for college so I didn’t have to deal with that, but I’ve heard some horror stories! I think she’s great because she’s a ginger though π
Fingers unite!
Liv says
Hahaha “Fingers” unite! She’ll love your comment π
Shannon says
Hahaha!! Ginger life>
Georgie says
D’aww I love this so much! Lovin that onesie. I lived with my freshman roommate all 4 years of college. THE number one hardest part of graduating is missing your friends that are all over the place. Luckily it gives you a a great excuse to travel and visit.
Liv says
That’s amazing that you and your freshman roommate got along so well and lived together all 4 years! So fun. Oh no, I don’t even want to THINK about graduating and leaving everyone yet, ahhh!
Rebecca @ MyEagerFeet says
Wow – that’s awesome you two get along so well! I wish I had known about that website. My freshman roommate was totally crazy (talked to herself, had extensive Skype calls with her cats, etc.). I ended up moving out as soon as I could!
Liv says
Wow, how crazy! Skype calls with her cats?! I’m glad you were able to get out of there π
Sam @ Grapefruit & Granola says
I’m glad you love your roommate! I had the worst roommate experience ever my freshman year. When we got matched, she was persistent that I send her a picture of myself. Once I did, she admitted that she wanted to see what race I was because she did not want a black roommate!!!! I could not believe her. I immediately tried to get a different person but couldn’t arrange for it by the start of school. Things just went downhill from there. We only lived together for a few weeks but I was honestly scared at certain points during that time.
Liv says
Woah, that’s a crazy story! SO glad you were able to get out of that roommate situation.
Alison @ Daily Moves and Grooves says
This is so great! I think I’d get along well with Shannon too π
I adore my roommate, Jordan. She’s a crazy, hilarious, hard working lady. I’m rooming with her next year, so I guess you could say we like each other. π
Liv says
Aww, so fun that y’all are rooming together next year, too! So glad you’ve a good freshman roommate experience, too π
Dannii @ Hungry Healthy Happy says
Chocolate is a definitely a food group. I like her style. I have never shared a room with someone, but I have lived in a lot of shared houses before.
Hayley @ Full of Life says
This is really cute!! That’s great that you are close with your roommate, definitely not an easy relationship to build! I was friends with my freshman dorm roommate but we weren’t super close. She basically slept all day and stayed out all night so we only really hung out when I would go out to parties with her. Not sure how she managed to pass her classes haha
Emily says
Your roommate sounds really cool! :)) She sounds like my room-mates and some of my best friends. I love that you are so similar and complimentary. And the bananas/peanut butter/chocolate chip thing. Yup. All the way!
Beverley says
Having a roommate that is also your close friend is the best! Unfortunately in my first year of university, my roommate and I were COMPLETE opposites… She wasn’t a mean person or anything, but just truly opposites in every. single. sense. it was pretty hard. Glad it worked out for you!
Liv says
That sounds tough! I bet you’re super good at living with all types of people now π
Anastacia Ry | student roommate finder says
I also have a roommate and we treat each other like we’re sisters! One time, I was so sick and she is the one who took care of me. She cut her class just to make sure that I am okay and I feel bad for it. She is very funny too, she wakes up every 12 midnight just to have a chocolate drink and some chocolate chip cookies. I never thought that it will be like this I hear so many horror stories for having a bad roommate, but this one is one of the best!
Britt says
Wow! Love this so much! Shannon seems great <3
