Like I mentioned in my post yesterday, a big perk of not being on a college meal plan is saving lots of $$$. I don’t give myself a set budget since I’m not usually an over-spender, but I was really curious to see how much I’m spending on food.
I did a fun experiment to track my spending for a few days of meals to see how buying food on my own compares to paying for a meal plan, and the results were really interesting! I did a few days of meals since every day varies so much.
B: Oatmeal with a splash of almond milk and a few dried cranberries
Some of my friends like grabbing a cup of oatmeal from the dining hall on their way to class (which is definitely convenient) but it’s so cheap and easy to make them in the microwave while I get ready! I buy regular bags of oats because they have no added sugar and they’re cheaper than buying individual packets, so win-win.
1 serving oatmeal ($.25) + cranberries and almond milk (~$.25) = $.50
Des: A white chocolate toffee blondie from the freezer ($= no idea?)
D: Out with friends- half of a barbacoa burrito bowl at Chipotle (saving the other half for lunch another day) = $3.88
Des: Kid-size bowl of Candy Bar Pie ice cream at Ben & Jerrys (<– SOOO good!) = $2.70
Friday total: $12.43
B: Same ole, same ole- oatmeal = $.50
L: Other half of Chipotle burrito bowl = $3.88
S: Post run snack- Banana with ~1 tablespoon natural, organic peanut butter ($.40) + 1 Dove Sea Salt Caramel Dark Chocolate ($.10) = $.50 <– I’m loving the chocolate, peanut butter, & banana combo!
D: English Muffin Pizzas ($1) + 1 head of broccoli ($.75) + blueberry Chobani ($1) =$2.75 Sunday total: $9.13
3 day average = $9.33 per day —> Much better than spending $11.67 for one meal!
If I’d tracked my spending for a longer period of time, I think it’d be a more accurate picture of how much I spend since I usually eat out more (and spend more) on the weekends than the weekdays, so if I’d included more weekdays, the average per day would be a bit lower.
Anyways, I’ve realized that in college, it’s not always possible to get to the cheapest grocery store or eat as many fruits or veggies as I did at home. So, I do the best I can without spending too much time/effort thinking about food since there are too many other things going on!
Do you usually have dessert after dinner?
Um, yes. Usually something chocolate-y, preferably ice cream.
What’s your favorite flavor of Ben & Jerry’s?
Too many to count! Candy Bar Pie, Milk & Cookies, Half Baked, Mint Chocolate Cookie, Chunky Monkey…
